Medicare Hospice Benefit Provides for Three Levels of Care
Routine
Most patients will fall under routine care, which means the nurse will see you/loved one in your home and provide support for family to care for you in the home.
Continuous
Some patients will require the nurse to be present for a continuous time period to control symptoms (eg6-24 hours). If this is the case, and you need a nurse present around the clock to control your symptoms, the agency will provide continuous care.
GIP
If your symptoms can not be adequately managed with continuous care, then the agency can provide GIP level care. This means that you/your loved one will be admitted to a facility where you can be monitored 24/7 and your symptoms can be controlled. (Note: this benefit is specific for symptom control and cannot be employed for self care needs such as bathing/dressing, meal preparation, and routine medication administration)
